Say Yes to Learning Cursive Writing

The Letter

Writing a letter by hand to a loved one

And putting a stamp on it

that you bought

Is falling by the wayside

A written letter

Of love and concern

Makes your heart glow

Knowing they took the

time to think of you

In their own handwriting

Hand-written letters or just writing in cursive seems to be going downhill as computer writing gains a fast foothold in American society. Some schools do not even teach cursive writing -- instead they focus on computers so children can be successful in this age of fast –evolving technology.

Receiving a letter from a lover written in cursive used to make my heart beat faster. Writing a letter to grandmother thanking her for my birthday money – well, she cherished that. Some people think it is okay to skip the cursive and others think, Welcome to the New Age. People don’t need to write in cursive anymore. Other scholars think that we should keep cursive alive before it becomes a lost art.”

“While I am all for the use of technology to educate our children, I don't understand the haste to dispense with a time-tested and time-honored method of communication that does not depend on technology,” said S. Amjad Hussain, in an article on toledoblade.com, Aug. 8, 2001. Hussain went on to say, “I shudder at the thought of our children growing up not knowing how to write their name, sign a document, or write a note to a sick friend or relative.”

Other people think it is okay for children to give up on cursive writing. “It is just that I don’t think that the skill of handwriting in cursive is nearly as high of a priority as many other things that are needed in the modern world,” written in an article, July 13, 2011, on wordstreampublishing.wordpress.com.

My thoughts are that cursive writing should still be taught in school, in spite of modern technology. We should not let the art of cursive writing die out. I think about the song sang long ago by Joe Cocker, “My Baby Wrote Me a Letter,” (youtube.com/watch?v=4RnjWLVyMps). Grandma or grandpa would love to have a hand-written letter from you. It’s really romantic to send your loved one a handwritten note or letter to say that you love them. It would be really sad to see this “lost art” go by the wayside.

Cursive Writing is a beautiful art. As a child I had learned this art. But I found it hard to practice as I grew older because I depended on keyboard more than a pen.
